Questions & Answers » Retina and 4K screens not showing enough information » 9/14/2022 9:04 am

We have been testing TournamentSR with various Mac Retina and 4K screens. These screens have many more pixels than previous displays. Both Mac OS and Windows automatically "scale" such displays. This makes text larger and easier to read, but reduces the total amount of information that can be shown. Since TournamentSR often needs to show lots of information, this can sometimes be a problem.

We are currently reworking TournamentSR to work better with scaled displays. The next version should be available in November. If you still have trouble seeing enough information and can stand smaller text, reduce the scaling so it's closer to 100%. See the links below for changing display scaling:

Today we confirmed the video's instructions work for the printers we have: Epson WF3540, Epson WF7010, HP CP2025.  The instructions should work for most printers.  While the above video works, we've also documented the process at the following link:

If you have a new Mac and a printer capable of two sided printing, TournamentSR might always print double sided.  We can't reproduce this because we don't have the latest Mac.  We have ordered one that should arrive in late January.

In the meantime, the video at the link below might be useful.  It shows how to disable double sided printing.  You would re-enable double sided printing once your tournament is  over.

Once we have a new Mac, we'll see if this works.  If not, we'll try to determine a different mechanism.

While Chromebooks can't directly run Java programs, recent Chromebooks support Linux inside Chrome OS.  Linux supports running Java programs, so recent Chromebooks can run TournamentSR and the free support programs.

We've updated our documentation to describe how to use TournamentSR with Linux on Chromebooks.  See the section titled "Getting Java programs to run on a Chromebook" in "Ensuring your computer has java":

I assume the terms "top 6" and "top 8" refer to the number of placing positions for double elimination ladders.  The number of placing positions determines the structure of the double elimination bracket.  The answer depends on if your match numbers are numeric only (e.g. 1, 25, 100) or use letters and numbers (e.g. "AA2", "AD19", "BC62").  This is specified in the "File" menu's "Ladder/Misc. preferences..." window.

If match numbers use letters and numbers, you can use the "View" menu's "Emergency bracket repair..." feature to update the placing for each bracket (one by one).

If match numbers are numeric only, you can't change the placing positions once the tournament starts.  However, TournamentSR saves a backup copy of the tournament just before [Start the tournament] was clicked.  The backup copy uses the extension "AtStart" (instead of the normal "xml").  In this case, you'd launch another copy of TournamentSR (on the same computer is OK), load the AtStart file, modify the placing positions for each bracket (one by one), then [Start the tournament] and enter in all the results.  At that point, you'd stop using the original TournamentSR instance and start using the second one.

See the Reference Manual for information on Emergency bracket repair and the AtStart file.

The latest Mac OS version (Monterey - v12.0.1) might not let you access files and folders on your computer.  This is the result of updated "Security & Privacy" policies.  We are in the process of confirming the fix for this problem.  Keep an eye on this topic and our Help page for the solution.

As of TournamentSR version 8.1.0, you can also use [Start the Tournanment] to move all unplaced wrestlers into their first round matches.  If there are any such wrestlers, clicking [Start the Tournament] will report this and ask if you want them moved.  Click [Yes] to have the program move as many wrestlers as possible into their first round matches. The program then behaves as before: asking you to confirm the start (all checks are OK), or listing the issues (some checks failed).

Today we released TournamentSR version 8.1.0.  When you click [Start the Tournament], the program checks to see if wrestlers need to be assigned to their initial round matches.  If so, it asks if you want them moved.  If you select [Yes], the program makes an attempt to move all of them.

If that succeeds, the program then asks you to confirm you want the tournament to start.  Clicking [No] allows more changes to be made.  Thus, you can do this any time before the tournament actually needs to start.

If the program cannot move all wrestlers into their first round matches (e.g. would cause a conflict with same team avoidance rules) or there are other issues detected, the problems are displayed as in previous versions.  You must manually fix such issues.

We have decided this feature could be implemented as part of the sequence when [Start the Tournament] is pressed.  The program would detect wrestlers are not in their initial round matches and ask the user if it should attempt to move them.  If the user selects [Yes], the program would make one attempt to move everyone in.

We hope to have this ready by November.
